This course is aimed at mature students with an interest in art and design who are interested in studying a degree course in an art-related subject.

This course is designed for mature students who have an ongoing enthusiasm for the creative arts; wish to develop their growing interest in a variety of practical art and design areas, and who expect to extend their art and design skills in order to be able to study at degree level. In order to achieve this qualification you will need to complete 3 core units, 4 mandatory specialist units and 7 other specialist units. This will give you a broad range of experiences across art and design disciplines and equip you with the skills to progress into Higher Education.

How will my work be assessed?

The course is assessed via a series of internally set and marked assignments. It will be possible to gain a pass, merit or distinction at level 3 for all the units undertaken. There are no exams on the main award although students taking additional qualifications such as Level 2 Maths and English may have to take an exam at the end of the course. As well as producing a variety of outcomes relating to different disciplines you will be offered the opportunity to take part in a community project, visit galleries in London and attend talks given by visiting artists and designers. We also offer the chance to travel to one of the major cities in Europe in order to explore art and architecture further afield. Access to HE Art and Design students are encouraged to take part in their own group exhibition as well as the Faculty of Media and Creative Arts End of Year Show. By completing this course you will achieve:

  • A full portfolio of art and design work
  • Confidence in own ability to produce creative outcomes in relation to set projects

What can I do after this?

  • You can progress to higher education programmes at university or college, including our range of honours degrees validated by University of the Arts London and delivered at University Centre Southend & Thurrock
  • Some of you may also wish to apply to study further on the Foundation Art and Design Studies Level 4 Diploma course
  • Many universities require GCSE maths and English, or equivalent qualifications. It is worth checking what qualifications you require with the university or college you wish to progress to
  • Successful attendance at interview event
