Access to Higher Education (Art and Design)Level 3 Diploma

This course is aimed at mature students with an interest in art and design who are interested in studying a degree course in an art-related subject.

Course details


This course is for people that would like to study on a Higher Education programme in a wide variety of art and design degree programmes e.g. the Fine Art BA (Hons) but need to gain the required entry qualifications and skills.

Access programmes entail 13 hours of direct contact time in addition to a minimum of 13 hours independent study.

You will study a range of different units across the programme, some focusing on your academic skills and some more subject specific, such as:

  • Figure Studies
  • Photography
  • Printmaking
  • Final Major Project
  • 2D Visual Studies
  • Mixed Media
  • Graphic Design
  • Exhibition and Professional Practice

How will my work be assessed?

The course is assessed via a series of internally set and marked assignments. It will be possible to gain a pass, merit or distinction at level 3 for all the units undertaken. There are no exams on the main award although students taking additional qualifications such as Level 2 Maths and English may have to take an exam at the end of the course. As well as producing a variety of outcomes relating to different disciplines you will be offered the opportunity to take part in community projects, visit galleries locally and in London and take part in the Royal Opera House Design Challenge. Access to HE Art and Design students will take part in their own group exhibitions.

By completing this course you will achieve:

  • A portfolio of varied art and design work
  • Confidence in own ability to produce creative outcomes in relation to set projects
  • A qualification which will demonstrate your ability to achieve at higher levels

What can I do after this?

On successful completion of the course, and on acceptance at interview, you  will be able to progress to higher education programmes at universities across the country; including our own wide range of honours degrees validated by University of the Arts London and delivered at University Centre Southend & Thurrock.

  • Please Note: Many universities require GCSE maths and English, or equivalent qualifications. It is necessary to check what qualifications you will be expected to have with the university or college you wish to progress to.
