My name is Bex, I am 25 years old and I did my BTEC in Fashion and Clothing and then my BA degree in Fashion Communication and Marketing at South Essex College.
Straight from College I went to design for a clothing company called The Ragged Priest and am now their head designer.
My job entails trend prediction & analysis, design, fabric sourcing, overseeing product development, costing & sales analysis and managing a design team across different product areas including menswear, womenswear and accessories.
I started off working part time within the vintage aspect of the company and brought my ideas to management about starting a vintage re-worked collection and it went from there.
I loved my tutors at South Essex College and I felt supported throughout. I really felt that they helped to nurture my skills into something I can actually utilise. I learnt to be more organised and really work through a whole process rather than just the area’s that interested me. My time at the College was invaluable to me.
Higher education helps you to understand what you are really passionate about. When I joined my degree I was in no man’s land, I had finished my BTEC in design, gone on to LCF to study womenswear and quit within six months because I disliked it so much. The lecturers at South Essex College helped me to be more rounded and understand where my talents were.
The equipment at the college was fantastic in comparison to what I’m now used to in the industry.
My favourite memory of the College is the head of my course Jenny Sinton. I learnt so much from her and she really helped to make me an adult and not just a stroppy teenager. Jenny was then and still is now an inspiration to me.
If you want to get taught by people who genuinely care about what you want to do and who you want to be then South Essex College is for you.
I have been lucky enough to have my designs worn by the likes of Rihanna, Beyonce and Jessie J to name but a few. It is an amazing achievement but the best thing has been to watch the company grow and to have been part of something so exciting.
My ambitions for the future are to help The Ragged Priest grow and grow and develop even more as an accomplished fashion brand.
College definitely helped me to gain confidence both personally and in my skill set.
