Jon Day

Jon’s story shows how returning to education can open new opportunities and create a clear pathway forward.

My name is Jon, I am 28 years old, and I studied Access to Business at South Essex Colleges Group from September 2020 until May 2021. This is my story.

Before starting the course, I had spent my career working in banking and estate agency. While I had gained valuable experience, I realised I wanted to progress further and open up new opportunities for myself. Returning to education felt like the right step, and I chose South Essex Colleges Group as I had previously studied there and knew it offered a convenient location along with strong facilities to support my learning.

My time on the Access to Business course was a great experience. It provided me with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare for higher education, while also helping me develop confidence in my academic abilities. The environment felt professional and supportive, giving me the opportunity to improve important workplace skills that I continue to use today.

One of the most valuable aspects of the course was the discipline and structure it introduced. It challenged me in new ways, but it was also incredibly rewarding. It helped me develop strong study habits, confidence and a more focused mindset, all of which have been essential as I progressed.

After completing the course, I successfully progressed to the University of Essex, where I am now in my second semester studying Business Administration. The transition into university felt much smoother thanks to the preparation I received at South Essex College.

Looking back, further education gave me a real opportunity to improve my future prospects. It pushed me to develop both personally and academically, and it gave me the confidence to take my next step.

I would strongly recommend South Essex College to anyone considering returning to education. The quality of teaching, facilities and support for students of all abilities make it an excellent place to study.

Looking ahead, my ambition is to move into teaching and, potentially one day, return to South Essex College as a lecturer to support others on their journey, just as I was supported on mine.
