My name is Leon Hildersley, and I am a 19-year-old Level 3 Business Administrator Apprentice at South Essex Colleges Group. I work at Strathmore Care, based in their Head Office. This is my story.
I was first inspired to take the apprenticeship route while studying my Level 2 Business Administration course. My teacher highlighted the benefits of apprenticeships as a practical, paid alternative to university that allows you to gain experience while working towards a qualification. That idea really appealed to me, and I knew it was the right path for me.
In my role at Strathmore Care, I play an active part in the day-to-day running of the business. I support the team by helping to manage workloads and keep operations running smoothly. My tasks vary, from supervising outgoing call lists to filing confidential documents and supporting administrative processes. I enjoy the variety of the role, as it allows me to work independently while also being part of a team.
One of the projects I worked on involved promoting a new care home. Over four days, I distributed more than 1,500 leaflets across local areas, even in challenging weather conditions. It was a great experience that helped me build confidence and develop my communication skills.
Balancing work and study has been an important part of my apprenticeship. I have learned that setting aside dedicated time for both is key to staying organised and managing my responsibilities effectively.
Since starting my apprenticeship, I have developed a wide range of valuable skills. I’ve become more organised and confident in managing schedules, documents and workflows. My communication, time management and problem-solving skills have all improved, and I feel much more comfortable taking on new challenges.
I’ve also faced some challenges along the way, such as learning how to use Excel effectively, categorising costs and completing tasks for senior staff, including the CEO. However, learning on the job has helped me overcome these challenges and strengthen my technical skills.
One of my proudest moments was being awarded “Salesperson of the Day” at the Kingsclere Court Easter event. It was a great achievement and reflected the effort I’ve put into developing my skills.
My apprenticeship has given me a realistic understanding of the workplace, going beyond theory and allowing me to apply what I’ve learned in a professional setting. After completing my Level 3 apprenticeship, I progressed into a permanent role as an Assistant Administrator at Strathmore Homes, where I continue to support staff and contribute to the smooth running of the organisation.
My advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship is simple: go for it and keep pushing towards your goals. It’s a great opportunity to gain experience, build your CV and start your career while earning.
