Course Overview

The Engineering Machinist Level 3 Apprenticeship is designed for learners who want to work in advanced manufacturing and precision engineering environments. It is suitable for those employed in the sector who want to develop high‑level machining skills and work with specialist materials using both conventional and CNC machinery.

Delivered as a day‑release programme, apprentices attend the Luckyn Lane campus one day per week to complete practical and theoretical training alongside their employment. Throughout the apprenticeship, learners develop skills in machining complex components using equipment such as lathes, milling machines, grinding machines and multi‑axis CNC machine tools.

Learning focuses on accuracy, quality and efficiency, reflecting real industry expectations. Apprentices develop the ability to interpret technical drawings and documentation, select appropriate tools and machining processes, and set up machines to produce components to precise specifications. They also gain experience using measuring and testing equipment to check quality and accuracy, alongside developing safe working practices, problem‑solving skills and effective communication within engineering teams.

By the end of the apprenticeship, learners will be able to produce complex machined components and contribute to improving manufacturing processes. Successful completion includes a range of recognised engineering qualifications and prepares apprentices for skilled employment as engineering machinists, supporting long‑term career progression within advanced manufacturing. This course is delivered at our Luckyn Lane campus.

Applicants must be aged 16 or over and be employed in a trade or industry relevant to the apprenticeship, working in a job role such as a Machinist. You must hold GCSE Maths at grade C/4 or above, or a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in Maths, and GCSE English Language at grade C/4 or above, or a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification in English.
This will follow an Apprenticeship Standard programme which is occupation focused and concentrates on the relevant knowledge skills and behaviours required to complete the programme successfully. Completion of the Apprenticeship is designed to be recognised by relevant Professional Engineering Institutions at the appropriate level of professional registration (EngTech).

This course is free to apprentices, as the cost is paid by your employer Large companies can fund the course using their apprenticeship levy. SMEs can access government funding to subsidise the cost by 95%.

Apprentices who successfully complete this programme may progress into higher education. At the end of the apprenticeship, the college will work closely with you and your employer to support progression to the next level of training or to secure full‑time employment within the industry.
