Course Overview
The Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship supports you to develop the skills and knowledge needed to maintain, repair and operate engineering equipment within industrial environments. It is suitable if you are working, or aiming to work, in engineering or manufacturing roles that involve planned preventative and reactive maintenance.
During the apprenticeship, you will develop practical and technical skills linked to the installation, testing, servicing, maintenance and repair of equipment and systems. Learning focuses on how maintenance programmes are planned and delivered, including fault‑finding, component replacement and supporting the safe operation of plant and machinery. You may also develop experience of decommissioning activities when equipment is taken out of service.
The apprenticeship is delivered through a combination of workplace learning and day‑release study, with attendance at the Luckyn Lane campus one day per week for practical and theoretical training. You will develop the ability to work safely and compliantly, read and interpret technical documentation, and apply engineering procedures to meet operational requirements.
Throughout the programme, you will build skills in assessing and testing plant performance, preparing work areas, reinstating equipment after maintenance, and communicating effectively with colleagues and stakeholders. A strong emphasis is placed on health, safety and environmental practices, problem solving and professional communication, alongside developing a commitment to continuous professional development.
The apprenticeship typically includes a practical training period followed by an assessment phase and leads to achievement of a Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Knowledge). By the end of the programme, you will have developed the technical competence and professional behaviours required to work confidently as a maintenance and operations engineering technician. This course is delivered at our Luckyn Lane campus.
This course is free to apprentices, as the cost is paid by your employer Large companies can fund the course using their apprenticeship levy. SMEs can access government funding to subsidise the cost by 95%.
