Course Overview

The Level 3 Award for Solar PV Installer and Operator supports you to develop the knowledge and practical understanding needed to work with solar photovoltaic systems. It is suitable if you have a background in electrical, mechanical, civil or energy‑related roles, or if you are in the final stage of study within one of these fields. The course is also relevant if you are a technician with experience in a related job role. 

During the course, you can develop an understanding of how solar PV systems are installed, commissioned, operated and maintained. Learning focuses on the full lifecycle of solar PV systems, helping you understand how systems are designed, brought into operation and kept running safely and effectively. You will explore the processes involved in installing and commissioning solar PV systems, alongside the principles of system operation and maintenance. The course supports you to understand how performance is monitored, how faults are identified, and how ongoing maintenance contributes to system efficiency and safety. 

By the end of the course, you will have developed technical knowledge and practical awareness linked to solar PV installation and operation. This qualification supports progression into further training or continued professional development within renewable energy, electrical and sustainable power generation roles.

To study this course, you should have a background in electrical, mechanical, civil and energy professionals or be in your last year of study in the above related fields. The course is also suitable for technicians with at least two years’ experience in an associated job role. This qualification is available to learners aged 18+ years or over. You will need to have an understanding of solar photovoltaic systems installation, commissioning, and operation and maintenance. An additional UK requirement is to have an accredited and regulated successful assessment certificate for BS 7671: Requirements for Electrical Installations (18th Edition, amendment 2).
The Award qualification is assessed through: 3 observed practical tasks and a multiple-choice knowledge assessment If the units are completed separately open question papers are available for each unit.
