Course Overview

The Digital Software Development T Level is designed for learners who are interested in how digital systems and software are designed, built and maintained. It is well suited to those who enjoy problem solving, logical thinking and working with technology, and who want to develop skills for a career in software development or further study in the digital sector.

Throughout the course, learners build a strong core understanding of digital technologies within a business context. This includes exploring digital environments, data, planning, legislation and security, alongside the cultural, ethical and inclusive considerations that influence digital work. This helps learners understand how software development fits into wider organisational and social settings.

A key focus of the course is the occupational specialism in digital production, design and development. Learners analyse problems to define user requirements, then design, implement and test software solutions. They develop skills in maintaining and supporting software, working collaboratively, and using reliable sources of information to support technical decisions. Testing is embedded throughout, covering software, hardware, data and system interfaces.

An industry placement is a core part of the programme, allowing learners to apply their skills in a real workplace environment. Placements last for a minimum of 315 hours and are supported by regular progress reviews. By the end of the course, learners will be prepared to progress into skilled employment, apprenticeships or higher‑level study within software development and the wider digital sector. This course is delivered at our Centre for Digital Technologies in Basildon.
