A story of resilience, ambition, and exceptional dedication
Vinnie Sweetingham, an 18‑year‑old student from Southend, has been named Building Services Student of the Year. This reflects not only his academic commitment but also his remarkable resilience in the face of significant personal and health challenges. Studying at Luckyn Lane, Vinnie chose the Building Services course as the first step towards a career in plumbing, inspired by his grandfather and driven by a clear vision for his future.
A year defined by determination
Throughout the academic year, Vinnie faced periods of ill health and even major surgery. Yet his focus on learning never wavered. When he was unable to attend lessons on campus, he continued his GCSE Maths studies remotely from home, ensuring he stayed on track and maintained momentum in both his GCSE and vocational work.
His ability to adapt to changing circumstances - while keeping a positive outlook - has impressed staff and inspired fellow students. Vinnie consistently demonstrated maturity, perseverance, and a willingness to embrace new ways of learning, even during the most challenging moments.
A passion for learning and the trade
Vinnie’s enthusiasm for plumbing has been evident throughout his time on the course. He enjoyed both the practical and theoretical elements, finding confidence and clarity in the classroom as he built the foundations of his future career.
In his own words: “The course has made me confident in what I want to do. I’d definitely recommend it as a starting point into plumbing. I want to be self‑employed as a plumber and follow in my grandad’s footsteps.”
His commitment to developing his skills and understanding of the trade has set him apart as a student with genuine ambition and drive.
Looking ahead: a future built on strong foundations
Vinnie is now focused on completing his GCSE Maths qualification and progressing onto the Level 2 Plumbing course. His long‑term goal is to secure an apprenticeship and eventually establish himself as a self‑employed plumber.
His journey is a powerful example of overcoming barriers through determination, adaptability, and hard work. Vinnie’s resilience and positive attitude make him an outstanding ambassador for the college and a truly deserving recipient of the Building Services Student of the Year award.
Vinnie's story demonstrates that setbacks do not have to define your future. Through hard work, perseverance and a genuine passion for his chosen trade, he has continued to make excellent progress towards his career ambitions despite facing significant challenges along the way. His determination to succeed, combined with his positive outlook and commitment to learning, make him a worthy recipient of the Building Services Student of the Year award. We are incredibly proud of everything Vinnie has achieved and look forward to seeing him continue his journey as he progresses into further study, apprenticeships and a promising future in the plumbing industry.
