Vocational qualifications
Vocational qualifications are ideal if you have an idea of the career or industry you would like to explore. Available from Entry Level through to Level 3, including BTECs, they blend practical learning with essential theory, helping you build the skills, knowledge and confidence to progress into work, an apprenticeship or higher education.
From 2027/28, these programmes will evolve into V Levels, bringing together technical excellence and clear progression pathways.
Entry level courses are designed for students working below GCSE level, helping you build confidence, skills and a strong foundation for further study.
Level 1 courses are equivalent to GCSE grades 1/G to 3/D and are designed to help you build your skills and confidence as you progress in your learning journey.
Level 2 courses are equivalent to GCSE grades 4/C to 9/A* and help you strengthen your knowledge and skills, preparing you for the next step in your studies or future career.
Level 3 courses are equivalent to A Levels and help you develop advanced knowledge and skills, preparing you for university, an apprenticeship or moving into your chosen career.
Other study options
Explore A Levels, T Levels, Apprenticeships, and Functional Skills/GCSE English and Maths programmes designed to help you achieve your goals and progress to university, employment or further study.
A Levels are a traditional academic route that can lead to university and are well regarded by employers. They help you build strong subject knowledge and prepare you for higher education and future career opportunities.
T Levels combine classroom learning with real industry experience, so you can continue studying while gaining insight into your chosen career. You’ll also complete a substantial industry placement of at least 45 days with an employer, helping you build practical skills and confidence for your future.
An apprenticeship allows you to earn while you learn, combining a real job with training towards a nationally recognised qualification. You will gain valuable workplace experience and build the skills employers are looking for, with support available to help you find the right opportunity and take your next step.
English and maths courses are available from Functional Skills through to GCSE level. Courses are available for school leavers (aged 16-18) to study at our Southend, Thurrock, and Basildon campuses as part of your course. Adult learners (aged 19+) can study English and maths courses via our online distance-learning platform PASS TECH.
If you do not already have a grade 4/C or a Level 2 equivalent, you can study these courses for free and build the skills you need for your next step.
Progressing to university level
Progress with confidence through flexible pathways from Access to HE courses, available online and on campus, to Higher National Certificates (HNCs), Higher National Diplomas (HNDs), Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) and degree-level programmes that help you achieve your academic and career goals.
Access to HE (Higher Education) courses are for adults aged 19 and over who want to return to learning and progress to university. These courses help you build confidence and study skills, leading to degree level learning. The Access to HE Diploma is recognised by universities as a Level 3 qualification, giving you a strong foundation to move confidently on to higher education and future career opportunities.
Higher education courses at Level 4 and above are designed for adult learners looking to progress from A Levels, a Level 3 qualification or an Access to HE course. Our degrees and higher education qualifications are awarded by leading institutions, including the University of East Anglia, the University of Arts London, The Open University, Pearson and City & Guilds.
Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are career focused courses designed with employers to help you develop the skills needed for skilled roles. They are mainly classroom based, with flexible study options, and can lead to employment, further study or a career change. HTQs are eligible for student finance and offer a practical alternative to degrees or apprenticeships.
We also offer a number of programmes HNC (Higher National Certificate Level 4) and HND (Higher National Diploma Level 5).
