Joe Coward

A career in the maritime industry can take you in many different directions, from working on vessels and maintaining critical systems to supporting operations that keep the industry moving. For Joe Coward, a passion for boats and engineering led him from a specialist study programme into a Maritime Engineering Technician Apprenticeship. His journey highlights the value of hands-on learning, industry experience and being open to every opportunity that comes your way.

My name is Joe Coward, and I am a Level 3 Maritime Engineering Technician Apprentice. This is my story.

I grew up around the water and was always fascinated by how boats work, how they are maintained and what it takes to keep them operating safely and efficiently. My journey into maritime engineering began with the Marine Engineering Study Group course, a one-year Level 2 programme that introduced me to the core principles of mechanical and electrical engineering. The course also included valuable work experience on the river, giving me a real insight into life and work within the maritime industry. That experience helped confirm that this was the career path I wanted to follow and led naturally into my apprenticeship.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my apprenticeship has been the opportunity to work with industry-standard equipment and learn directly from experienced engineers and vessel crews working on the Thames. Every day brings new challenges and learning opportunities, and I have gained a huge amount of knowledge by working alongside professionals who are passionate about what they do.

Like any apprenticeship, it requires commitment and hard work. One of the biggest challenges I have faced has been managing my time effectively and balancing the demands of work and college. Learning how to stay organised and meet deadlines while maintaining a high standard of work has been an important part of my development and has helped me become more confident and independent.

One of my favourite memories so far was working on my first bulk carrier ship in Tilbury Docks. During this experience, I carried out maintenance on the vessel's hydraulic systems, which play a vital role in keeping the ship operational and able to carry out its work. Seeing these systems up close and understanding the importance of the equipment gave me a real appreciation of the scale and complexity of the maritime industry. It also opened my eyes to the variety of opportunities available within the sector and where a career in maritime engineering could take me.

The facilities and equipment at South Essex College Group have played an important role in preparing me for the workplace. Having access to high-quality training equipment allows us to develop our skills and build confidence before applying them in a professional environment. As technology and equipment continue to evolve within the industry, having the opportunity to practise in a college setting provides a strong foundation for future success.

My time at college has equipped me with the essential skills and knowledge needed to begin a career in the maritime industry. It has given me the confidence to apply what I have learned in the workplace and continue building on that knowledge through practical experience.

My advice to anyone considering the Maritime Engineering Technician Apprenticeship is to keep an open mind and embrace every opportunity. Whether it is learning a new skill, taking on a different task or listening to advice from experienced colleagues, every experience can help you grow. The more willing you are to learn, the more you will get out of your apprenticeship and your future career.
