Consistent excellence and determination

Now in his second year of study, Abu continues to demonstrate the same level of enthusiasm and determination he showed from the very beginning. He consistently meets deadlines, produces work of a high standard and uses technology responsibly and professionally. His motivation is driven by a clear ambition: he aspires to become an IT Engineer, and this long‑term goal fuels his commitment to success.

A respected leader and supportive peer

Abu engages extremely well with his peers and was elected as Student Representative, reflecting the trust and respect he has earned from both staff and classmates. In this role, he demonstrates strong leadership skills, helping to organise the classroom environment, distribute materials and encourage positive behaviour. His calm, structured approach contributes to a supportive learning atmosphere where all students feel included and motivated.

A standout moment in Abu’s journey was his sensitive support for a classmate who struggled with reading. Through encouragement and patience, he helped them build confidence over time, resulting in the learner becoming more willing to participate in reading activities. More recently, he successfully led a group task, maintaining focus, directing discussion and ensuring all learners completed their work. These moments highlight his emerging leadership skills, maturity and respect for others.

Looking ahead: a future in IT

Abu aims to progress to ESOL Entry Level 3 and Functional Skills Maths, with a long‑term ambition of becoming an IT Engineer. His dedication, leadership potential and commitment to continuous improvement make him an outstanding ambassador for the college and a highly deserving ESOL Student of the Year.

Reflecting on his achievement, Abu said: “I’m 18 and from Sudan. I’m an ESOL student and I enjoy the lessons as well as college life. I didn’t speak much English when I joined. I’m going to carry on studying English, and I’ve made lots of friends.”

Abu's journey is a powerful reflection of the opportunities that education can create. From developing his English language skills and building his confidence to supporting his classmates and taking on leadership responsibilities, he has consistently shown maturity, ambition and a genuine commitment to personal growth. His aspirations to progress his studies and pursue a career in IT engineering are supported by a strong work ethic and a clear determination to succeed. We are incredibly proud of Abu's achievements and look forward to seeing him continue to thrive as he takes the next steps towards his future goals.
