A supportive, encouraging and respected class member
Thomas is a valued presence within the classroom. Approachable, kind and encouraging, he regularly helps his peers stay focused and engaged. His ability to build positive relationships and support others has made him a trusted and respected member of the group.
During a recent educational trip to The Gambia, Thomas represented the college with maturity and professionalism. He supported students from different campuses, ensuring everyone felt included, comfortable and confident. His natural leadership qualities and teamwork skills were evident throughout the trip.
Outstanding professionalism in real‑world healthcare settings
Thomas’s practical experience has further highlighted his suitability for a future career in healthcare. During his work placement with Access Anyone, a patient transport service, he demonstrated reliability, empathy and excellent communication skills when working with both patients and staff. His person‑centred approach and compassionate nature made a strong impression.
He has also excelled in enrichment opportunities, achieving 3rd place in a skills competition where he was praised for his strong, patient‑focused approach to care. During a visit to Brentwood Hospital, healthcare professionals commended his enthusiasm, engagement and professionalism, describing him and his peers as a credit to the college. Judges at an Inter Skills competition further highlighted his excellent rapport with patients, noting his warm, respectful and person‑centred manner.
A bright future in Paramedic Science
Thomas plans to progress to university to study Paramedic Science. His dedication, compassion and growing practical experience make him exceptionally well prepared for a successful future in healthcare and a career centred on supporting and caring for others.
Thomas’s journey reflects resilience, kindness and a deep commitment to making a difference, qualities that make him an outstanding ambassador for the college and a truly worthy Health & Social Care Student and SECG Overall Student of the Year.
Thomas said: “I am very inspired by winning the award, and am grateful for the college for the achievement. The FEDEC competition helped me to gain confidence, I have participated twice we came second the first time, it was important to show me all the skills encompassed in one event, the second time we came 3rd, we had to be more dynamic in how we worked as we were a smaller cohort. With that extra learning ,my knowledge on how to communicate massively improved. I chose to study T levels, as its academic and work placement based, as when I get to uni a large proportion is communication is a massive barrier, Booksmart is important but so is communication. I am a hands on learner, so having both the academic and work experience was ideal for me. I plan to go to Anglia Ruskin to do paramedic science, to become a doctors that kind of route. My greatest achievement was being selected to go on the education trip to Gambia. Its was a once in a lifetime trip, I experienced healthcare in a third world country. It helped me demonstrate how committed I am. I would definitely recommend the college, the aspect of having a small class creates a sense of family and being able to communicate with the teachers and feeling comfortable to talk to tutors."
Thomas's journey is a powerful example of what can be achieved through hard work, determination and a commitment to supporting others. Whether contributing in the classroom, representing the college on international educational experiences, excelling in competitions or developing his skills through industry placements, he has consistently demonstrated the qualities that are essential in healthcare. His ambition to progress into Paramedic Science, combined with his compassion, professionalism and strong communication skills, gives him an excellent foundation for future success. We are incredibly proud of Thomas's achievements and his well-deserved recognition as both Health & Social Care Student of the Year and SECG Overall Student of the Year, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact he will make in his future career.
