A resilient, determined and high‑achieving young learner
Southend College is proud to celebrate Olivia McLauchlan as a nominee for Pre‑16 Student of the Year. Throughout her time on the Pathway to College programme in Years 10 and 11, Olivia has demonstrated exceptional resilience, determination and academic commitment.
Despite personal challenges, Olivia has consistently shown a positive, self‑motivated approach to her learning. Her hard work has resulted in Distinction grades across her Vocational and Science qualifications, alongside achieving a Grade 5 in GCSE English. She is currently working towards her higher GCSE Maths paper, continuing to strive for academic excellence and pushing herself to achieve her full potential.
A confident leader and positive role model
Olivia is a confident and engaged learner who contributes positively to classroom life. In group settings, she often takes on a leadership role by supporting peers, helping them understand tasks and encouraging them to achieve shared goals. She is known for her maturity, kindness and awareness of others, acting as a positive role model within the wider learning environment.
Her ability to balance academic focus with empathy and teamwork makes her a valued member of the Pathway to College community.
A standout achievement: success in Level 2 Work Skills
A defining moment in Olivia’s journey was her success in the Year 11 Level 2 Work Skills assessments. She confidently completed both a formal panel interview and a group debate on her first attempt. Despite initial nerves, Olivia demonstrated resilience and determination and overcame barriers to fully showcase her abilities.
Her performance highlighted her growing confidence, communication skills and readiness for further academic progression.
Looking ahead: a future in Media & Journalism
Olivia now aspires to progress into Media & Journalism, with plans to continue her studies at A‑Level or T‑Level at Southend City College or another Sixth Form provider in Essex. Her ambition, creativity and strong academic foundation position her well for success in this exciting field.
Olivia’s reflections: “The course was good and a great atmosphere to get back into an educational environment. I’m interested in fashion business and want to go into journalism. I’m so proud.”
