A standout achievement: completing the London Marathon
A defining feature of Michael’s journey is his commitment to applying his learning in meaningful real‑world contexts. He has actively participated in group work, volunteered with the Royal British Legion and fully engaged in the physical and practical elements of the course.
One of the standout highlights of his time on the programme was completing the London Marathon, raising £1,665 for SCAFT (Supporting Carers and Families Together), a charity supporting young carers. Finishing in 5 hours and 27 minutes, Michael demonstrated exceptional determination, resilience and a genuine commitment to making a positive difference in the community.
Professionalism recognised across the sector
Michael’s dedication has been consistently recognised by professionals. During enrichment activities, he achieved 3rd place in a skills competition, praised for his strong person‑centred approach to care. A visit to Brentwood Hospital further highlighted his professionalism, where staff commended his enthusiasm, engagement and respectful manner, describing him and his peers as a credit to the college.
Judges at an Inter Skills competition also noted his excellent rapport with patients, highlighting his warm, respectful and person‑centred approach.
Looking ahead: a future in the Armed Forces or policing
Michael has secured an interview with the Royal Engineers and is also considering a future with Essex Police through their Policing Degree route. Whichever path he chooses, he has already demonstrated the academic ability, dedication and determination needed to succeed.
Reflecting on his achievement, Michael said: “I’m studying Level 3 and I’m so pleased I chose this over A levels. The tutors are great and I really enjoyed the course. The trip to Thriftwood was absolutely amazing. Winning this award feels great, I’m so excited. I want to join the Army in December, in the Royal Engineers.”
