Deborah Wingfield

At University Centre South Essex, we support learners at every stage of life, helping you turn passion into profession with the right guidance, facilities and encouragement. Whether you are returning to education, balancing family life or developing a long-standing skill, our courses are designed to help you grow in confidence and build real industry-ready experience. Deborah’s story is a powerful example of how determination and creativity can lead to a fulfilling and successful career.

My name is Deborah Wingfield, I am 40 years old, and I studied Costume Construction at University Centre South Essex from 2018 to 2021. This is my story.

I am a mum of four children, and before starting the course I was taking on occasional alteration jobs while raising my family. Sewing has always been part of my life, I’ve been doing it since I was eight years old.

After leaving school, I studied fashion design, but my career path took me in different directions. None of the jobs I had truly matched what I wanted to do. While raising my children, I continued being creative, making costumes for them and even starting a small side project creating tutus.

I discovered the Costume Construction course almost by accident at a time when I was not actively planning to return to education. When I realised how close it was to home and that it was linked to the Royal Opera House, I immediately felt excited, even though I was nervous about applying.

After attending an open day, I took the leap and enrolled on the course. Balancing study with family life was not always easy, but because the course included practical work and was local, I was able to manage it alongside my commitments.

During my studies, I developed a wide range of technical and professional skills. These included historical pattern cutting, costume construction, classical tutu making taught by Royal Opera House professionals, conservation techniques and research skills. I also improved my drawing, presentation and writing skills, learned to work effectively in a team and gained knowledge in invoicing and building a professional portfolio website.

While still studying, I set up my own alterations business, using it as a way to gain hands-on experience and deepen my understanding of garment construction. This real-world experience, alongside my qualifications, helped me build confidence and credibility in the industry.

During the course, I had the opportunity to work on exciting projects, including designing for the Digby Fairweather Jazz Centre and taking part in a Royal Opera House design competition, where student work was showcased at Covent Garden. These opportunities helped me build a strong portfolio and gain recognition for my work.

Since graduating, I have continued to run my bridal alterations business and have worked on a variety of projects within the industry. One of my biggest achievements was working as a wardrobe supervisor for a pantomime production, managing costumes for a large cast and overseeing backstage operations.

I have also gained experience working with performers on tour and am currently part of a design team for a film project. Each opportunity has helped me grow in confidence and further develop my skills.

Looking back, the course played a huge role in my journey. It not only helped me improve my technical abilities but also taught me professionalism, communication and how to present myself confidently in the industry. As someone who experiences anxiety, these skills have been just as valuable as my creative development.

Completing my degree gave me a real sense of achievement and confidence. It showed me that I could turn a lifelong passion into a career.

Looking ahead, I would love to continue working in costume design, particularly in television and film, and keep building on the experience I have gained.
