Ethan Khumalo

At South Essex Colleges Group, we are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment where every learner can thrive. We understand that everyone’s experience is different, and we are here to help you feel confident, understood and supported as you work towards your future. Ethan’s story highlights how being yourself, embracing your strengths and receiving the right support can help you succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

South Essex Colleges Group student Ethan Khumalo, aged 20, has taken part in the BBC documentary Inside Our Autistic Minds, presented by Chris Packham. His story is a powerful example of how confidence, preparation and support can help you make the most of every opportunity.

Ethan studies Games Design at the Basildon Centre for Digital Technologies, where he has progressed from a Level 2 course through to degree-level study. His journey shows how you can build your skills and move forward step by step, developing confidence along the way.

Ethan was invited to take part in the programme through his involvement with the Anna Kennedy Online charity, which raises awareness and understanding of autism. Taking part in the documentary gave him a unique opportunity to share his experiences and be part of something meaningful.

Reflecting on the experience, Ethan spoke positively about the filming process and the people he worked with. He enjoyed meeting Chris Packham and learning more about how television production works behind the scenes. It was an experience that allowed him to explore a different side of the media world while building his confidence.

Ethan also shared how he manages his autism and mental health. He explained that being prepared helps him feel more comfortable and ready to take on new challenges. Like many people, he experiences both good days and more difficult days, but he has found ways to manage this, including using music as a positive outlet.

During his time at college, Ethan has shown dedication and commitment to his studies. His tutors have recognised his strengths, particularly in sound design, and his willingness to support other students. Being part of a learning environment where he feels valued has helped him continue to grow.

Looking ahead, Ethan hopes to build a career in games production, particularly focusing on music and sound. Alongside his studies, he is also passionate about performing rap and hip hop, combining his creative interests in different ways.

Ethan’s advice for others is simple and powerful. If you are struggling or feeling unsure, remember that it is okay to not have everything figured out. What matters is taking small steps forward and finding what works for you.

If Ethan’s story has inspired you, you will find support here to help you succeed. Our courses and student support services are designed to help you feel confident, understood and ready for your next step.
