Gemma Salter

At University Centre South Essex, we help students turn passion into profession through industry connections, hands-on learning and a supportive environment. Our Costume Construction course combines technical skill with real-world experience, giving students the confidence to step into exciting roles within the creative industries. Gemma’s journey shows how dedication, curiosity and the right support can open doors to incredible opportunities.

My name is Gemma Salter, I am 25 years old, and I studied BA (Hons) Costume Construction at University Centre South Essex from 2016 to 2020. This is my story.

Before coming to University Centre South Essex, I had completed my A-levels but wasn’t able to get into university straight away. Instead, I chose to study a foundation diploma, which gave me a broader understanding of the creative industries and helped me decide what I really wanted to do. After completing that course, I successfully applied to the Costume Construction degree.

Since graduating during the pandemic, I’ve had some amazing opportunities. I worked a Christmas season at LaplandUK, which was an incredible experience, and I’ve been accepted into the Royal Opera House costume pool. I’m currently preparing to start my first role as a dresser at the Royal Opera House on a new production.

In this role, I’ll be helping performers get into their costumes, assisting with quick changes during live performances and preparing costumes for each show. It’s a fast-paced environment where attention to detail is vital, and I’m really excited to begin.

One of the main reasons I chose this course was because of its strong connection with the Royal Opera House, as well as the tutors, who are still actively working in the industry. This meant I was learning from people with real, up-to-date experience and gaining insight into what the industry is really like.

The course taught me so much more than I expected. I developed a wide range of technical skills, including creative pattern cutting, making a tutu alongside the Royal Opera House’s head costumer, accurate measuring techniques and working with different fabrics and fastenings. It also gave me an understanding of the many different roles within a costume department, something a lot of people don’t realise exists.

Having access to industry-standard equipment was also incredibly valuable. Everything I used during my studies is what I now see in professional environments, which made the transition into industry much easier.

Looking back, it’s hard to pick just one favourite memory. Being surrounded by supportive tutors and close friends every day made the whole experience special. It was a space where you could learn, grow and feel supported at every step.

One of the biggest changes for me has been confidence. While I’ve always been confident with people, I struggled to feel confident about my work. Having my work displayed at the Royal Opera House in the Linbury Theatre changed that. It helped me believe in my abilities and speak more confidently about what I create.

University Centre South Essex has played a huge role in my life. The Costume Construction team are incredibly supportive, always offering guidance and encouragement. They genuinely want you to succeed and will support you every step of the way.

Looking ahead, my goal is to become a costume supervisor or wardrobe manager on major West End productions. It’s exciting to think that something I once thought was impossible is now within reach.

If someone had told me ten years ago that I would have a degree in Costume Construction and be starting a role at the Royal Opera House, I wouldn’t have believed them.
