My name is Augustus Nweke, I am 51 years old, and I studied Fine Art at University Centre South Essex from 2016 to 2020. This is my story.
Before returning to education, I worked as a security officer. I began my journey by enrolling on an Access to Higher Education course, which prepared me for university-level study and gave me the confidence to continue onto a degree in Fine Art.
I chose to study at University Centre South Essex because of its location and its strong focus on supporting adult learners. The Access course provided an excellent foundation, making the transition into higher education feel achievable. The support I received from tutors such as Dr Cherry, Andy and Matt was invaluable. They encouraged me to push myself, develop my ideas and believe in my abilities.
During my time on the course, I gained a range of important skills, including collaboration, organisation and leadership. I also had access to a wide range of facilities, including studios for printing, woodworking and sculpture. These resources allowed me to explore different techniques and develop my own artistic approach.
My creative practice evolved significantly during my studies. I developed a strong interest in combining printing with painting, something that began during my Access course. This approach has now become central to my work, influencing my style and the way I create art.
After completing my degree, I continued my academic journey by undertaking a Master’s degree in Art, specialising in painting. Since then, I have exhibited my work in several high-profile group exhibitions and continue to develop my career as an artist.
Alongside my creative work, I also work at Stansted Airport, where I help protect civil aviation by ensuring the safety and security of the airport and its operations. Balancing my career with my artistic practice has allowed me to continue pursuing my passion while maintaining a professional role.
As an artist, I am involved in organising and curating exhibitions, developing my critical practice and continuing to produce new work. My long-term ambition is to undertake a practice-based Doctorate in Fine Art, further expanding my research and creative output.
Looking back, my time at University Centre South Essex helped me grow in confidence and believe in my abilities. It gave me the focus and direction I needed to set and achieve my goals.
I would highly recommend studying at University Centre South Essex, especially for adult learners. The environment is flexible, supportive and welcoming, and the staff are dedicated to helping you succeed.
