My name is Sophie Wade, I am 24 years old, and I studied BA (Hons) Graphic Design and Illustration at University Centre South Essex from 2020 to 2023. This is my story.
After completing my A Levels in 2017, I spent three years working in local government administration roles. Although this gave me valuable experience, I realised that I was not feeling fulfilled in my work. In 2020, I made the decision to return to education and follow a more creative career path.
Studying locally really appealed to me, as it allowed me to commute each day and stay close to home. When I first showed an interest in the course, I met with John, the course leader at the time, who reassured me that I could succeed even without a creative background. Having that belief and encouragement from the very beginning gave me the confidence to take that step.
One of the things I valued most about the course was the small class size. With around twelve students, I was able to receive a high level of one-to-one support. The tutors were always available, whether in person or online, and created a welcoming and inclusive environment where I felt encouraged to grow. Their passion for the subject made a real difference and helped keep me motivated.
Studying at this level gave me a real sense of achievement. Working towards deadlines and completing projects that I had invested so much time and effort into was incredibly rewarding. My tutors supported and challenged me throughout, helping me achieve the best possible results.
One of my proudest achievements was working in partnership with the RSPB on my final major projects in both my second and third year. Collaborating with their team and engaging with young volunteers at Rainham Marshes was a unique and valuable experience, and one that I will always be grateful for.
Alongside my studies, I also took part in additional opportunities that helped me grow further. I worked as a Higher Education Peer Mentor during my second and third year and became part of the college’s board of governors in my final year. These experiences helped build my confidence and allowed me to develop both personally and professionally.
Since completing my course, I have been focusing on my next steps, applying for roles and preparing for events such as the D and AD New Blood Festival. Achieving a First Class degree has been my goal from the start, and I feel incredibly proud that my hard work and determination have paid off.
Looking ahead, I am hoping to secure a role as a junior graphic designer, where I can continue developing my skills in both print and digital design. In the future, I would like to progress into more senior roles and eventually lead my own creative team. I also hope to one day set up my own business.
