Taylor skevington

My name is Taylor Skevington, I am 23 years old, and I studied BSc (Hons) Criminology & Forensic Investigation at University Centre South Essex from October 2017 to June 2020. This is my story.

After completing my A-Levels at Seevic College in English Language and Literature, Anthropology, Sociology and Psychology, I knew I wanted to continue studying a subject that combined my interests in society, behaviour and crime. The Criminology and Forensic Investigation degree stood out to me as it offered a unique combination of topics that I hadn’t seen elsewhere, and the location made it easy to travel.

During my time on the course, I developed a strong understanding of criminology and research methods. The Personal Development module was particularly useful, helping me build skills such as writing a CV and preparing for interviews. The work placements in my final year also gave me valuable insight into real-world career opportunities within the field.

The course helped me develop key academic and professional skills, including research, writing, time management and presentation. These skills became especially important as I progressed into further education. The variety of assignments meant I was constantly developing and improving, which prepared me well for the next stages of my academic journey.

One of the best parts of my experience was the supportive learning environment. Lectures were always engaging, and being part of a friendly and welcoming group of peers made the experience even more enjoyable. The lecturers were also incredibly supportive, providing constructive feedback that helped me grow academically and build confidence in my work.

After completing my degree, I went on to study an MA in Criminology at the University of Essex, where I achieved a Distinction. I am now continuing my academic journey as a first-year PhD student in Criminology.

Alongside my studies, I worked as a part-time Research Officer on the Home Office-funded Understanding Domestic Abuse Perpetrators Project. In this role, I was responsible for contributing to research and writing the literature review, as well as supporting the administrative side of the project. This opportunity came through my PhD supervisor, who recognised how closely the topic aligned with my research interests.

Looking ahead, my ambition is to become a researcher and academic within criminology or sociology, contributing to important work that can influence policy and improve understanding within the field.

My time at University Centre South Essex played a key role in helping me build confidence, develop academic skills and prepare for higher levels of study. It gave me the foundation I needed to progress and succeed in further education.
