Course Overview
The Construction Management Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) for England is designed to equip you with the knowledge and practical skills needed for professional roles within the construction industry. The programme combines theory with applied practice, preparing you to manage modern construction projects effectively while meeting technical, legal and sustainability requirements.
Through real‑world case studies and project‑based learning, you will build the confidence and capability needed to progress into supervisory, managerial or project management roles, or continue onto higher‑level study. Throughout the course, you will develop a strong foundation in project management, including planning, scheduling, budgeting and resource allocation. You will learn how to manage scope, time, cost, quality and risk, and develop strategies to respond to challenges and minimise disruption. Cost estimation, budget control and financial management are key areas of study, helping you forecast costs accurately and maintain financial sustainability across construction projects.
You will also gain technical understanding of construction methods, materials and technologies used in contemporary practice. This includes exploring construction sequencing, site layout and logistics, construction technology and building systems, as well as studying building regulations and compliance in England.
You will develop knowledge of health and safety, environmental responsibilities, accessibility standards and the legal frameworks that govern construction activity. Risk management and health and safety play a central role in the programme, helping you develop the skills needed to identify, assess and reduce risks while creating safe working environments for all stakeholders. You will also study sustainable construction practices, including energy‑efficient design, responsible material selection, waste reduction and environmentally conscious construction methods.
Contract administration and stakeholder management are embedded throughout the qualification, giving you an understanding of construction contracts, negotiation and dispute resolution. You will develop strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with clients, contractors, consultants and regulatory bodies.
The course also introduces digital tools and technologies, including Building Information Modelling (BIM) and construction management software, supporting effective collaboration and improved project outcomes. Overall, this HTQ provides you with a comprehensive, industry‑aligned foundation, developing the technical knowledge, professional skills and digital capability you need to succeed in construction management within a dynamic and evolving industry.
To study this course, you will need BTEC Level 3 qualification in Construction / A Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one subject.
This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent) and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) in subjects such as maths and English. Alternatiely, other related Level 3 qualifications such as T Levels Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved further education institution relevant work experience or an international equivalent to the above qualifications.
Assessment uses a range of methods to evaluate your knowledge, skills and application throughout the course. This may include written coursework such as individual or group assignments, reports, presentations and case studies, alongside practical assessments that test technical skills, problem‑solving and decision‑making in realistic construction scenarios.
Assessment may also include feedback from work‑based learning through supervisors or mentors, portfolio submission of assignments and projects, and in some cases a viva voce examination to assess understanding and communication. Peer and continuous assessment, including quizzes, tests and participation in learning activities, may be used to support progress and ongoing development.
On successful completion of the Construction Management HTQ, you will be well prepared to progress into a range of professional roles within the construction industry. Career routes may include positions such as construction project manager or site supervisor, where you would be responsible for coordinating projects, managing teams, ensuring health and safety compliance and overseeing day‑to‑day site operations.
The qualification also supports progression into specialist roles such as estimator or quantity surveyor, building inspector or compliance officer, facilities manager, or construction consultant, using skills in cost control, regulations, project planning and risk management.
You may also choose to continue your professional development through further study, specialist training or industry certifications, or progress into self‑employment by starting your own construction business or consultancy.
