Course Overview

The Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance Level 2 and 3 Combined Award is designed for learners who work in vehicle maintenance and repair and want to develop the skills required to work safely on electric and hybrid vehicles. It is suitable for technicians who are carrying out routine maintenance or repair activities and need to understand how to operate safely around high‑ and low‑voltage vehicle systems.

Throughout the course, learners develop an understanding of electric and hybrid vehicle systems, including how key components operate and the hazards associated with high‑energy electrical systems. The course focuses strongly on health and safety, helping learners recognise risks and understand how to reduce the risk of injury to themselves and others when working on these types of vehicles.

Learners also develop practical skills in safely preparing electric and hybrid vehicles for routine maintenance and repair, including vehicles that may have previously experienced damage to their electrical systems. While the course does not involve working directly on high‑voltage components or systems, learners gain the knowledge needed to work confidently and safely around them, record information accurately and make appropriate recommendations.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to carry out routine maintenance and repair work on electric and hybrid vehicles in line with industry expectations. This combined Level 2 and 3 qualification supports professional development for technicians as electric and hybrid vehicles become an increasingly common part of the motor industry. This course is delivered at our Stephenson Road campus.

To study for Level 2 you will need 3 GCSEs (Recommended), and appropriate vehicle maintenance and repair knowledge and skills at Level 2. To study at Level 3 you will need appropriate vehicle maintenance and repair knowledge and skills at Level 3 and Level 2 Electric/Hybrid Vehicle routine maintenance.
Assessment is in IMI practical and written tasks and confirms the learner’s knowledge of safe working practices and routine maintenance activities in line with IMI standards.
The cost of this course is £965
Completion of the Level 2 qualification enables learners to safely isolate and reinstate a high‑voltage system. Progression to Level 3 allows learners to carry out replacement of high‑voltage components once the system has been safely isolated. Following successful completion of Level 3, learners can progress to the IMI Level 4 Award in the Diagnosis, Testing and Repair of Electric and Hybrid Vehicles and Components.
