Course Overview

The Pathways to Independence programme supports you to develop the skills needed for independent living and adulthood in a safe and supportive learning environment. It is suitable if you would benefit from extra support while building confidence, life skills and readiness for the future. 

Throughout the programme, you can develop practical skills that support everyday independence. Learning focuses on areas such as healthy lifestyles, teamwork and accessing the local community, helping you feel more confident managing daily routines and engaging with others. You will also explore career planning and future goals, supporting you to think about next steps and develop awareness of different opportunities. Activities are designed to help you build independence at a pace that suits you, while developing responsibility, communication and self‑confidence. Maths and English are included at an appropriate level to support your overall development and progression.

 By the end of the programme, you will have strengthened your independent living skills, confidence and readiness for adulthood, supporting progression into further learning, training or supported pathways that match your individual needs. This course is delivered at our Southend and Thurrock campuses, as well as our Centre for Digital Technologies in Basildon.

There are no formal qualifications required for this programme, it is designed for young people with recognised learning difficulties and or disabilities. Learners aged 19 years or older will require an Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP). Candidates must also successfully attend an interview.
You will be assessed by a portfolio of work completed.
This course is free to UK learners under 19 who are not in employment
This course covers many transferable skills which will allow for potential progression into a range of areas includingfurther study at an appropriate level employment or supported employment.
