Course Overview

The Hair and Media Makeup Studies Level 2 Diploma is designed for learners who want to develop practical skills for working in the fashion, television and film industries. It is suitable for those who are passionate about hair and make‑up and want to build the knowledge, confidence and technical ability needed to begin a career as a professional make‑up artist.

Throughout the course, learners develop a wide range of creative and technical skills used in media make‑up and hair design. This includes fashion and period make‑up, face and body art, photographic hair and beauty, temporary hair colouring, tanning and decorative techniques such as plaiting, twisting and henna design.

Learners work on live models and develop an understanding of how looks are created to meet different briefs and production requirements. Learning also focuses on professional practice, including client care, communication and health and safety. Learners are taught how to research ideas, use reference material effectively and create finished looks that meet industry expectations.

Teaching is delivered by industry‑experienced professionals and takes place in a creative, practical environment that reflects real working conditions. The course includes opportunities to take part in industry visits, workshops, guest talks and work experience, as well as contributing to fashion shows and creative projects.

By the end of the course, learners will have developed strong practical skills, industry awareness and a portfolio of work, supporting progression into further study, training or entry‑level opportunities within the hair, make‑up and media industries.

To study this course, you will need a Level 1 qualification or two GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D), which must include Maths or English. Applicants are also required to attend an interview successfully as part of the entry process. You will be expected to purchase salon wear, equipment, a kit, textbooks and consumables at enrolment, including providing your own hair equipment and make‑up kit. Throughout the course, you must maintain correct uniform standards, make a one‑off payment for annual consumables, and keep a working portfolio to support your practical learning and progression.
You will be assessed through a combination of practical observations, online examinations, and portfolio‑based assignments, allowing you to demonstrate both your practical skills and understanding of the subject.
