Course Overview

The Level 2 Domestic Energy Solutions System Design course supports you to develop the knowledge and skills needed to understand and design integrated domestic energy systems. It is suitable if you are interested in renewable and low‑carbon technologies and want to explore how solar PV, electric vehicle charging and battery storage systems work together in residential settings.

This course is delivered at our Thurrock College in Grays, Essex. During the course, you can learn how domestic energy solutions are designed from initial assessment through to final proposal. Learning focuses on customer profiling, helping you assess household energy needs and determine system suitability. You will explore how to calculate solar potential, correctly size photovoltaic arrays and determine panel numbers and installation space requirements. You will also develop an understanding of selecting appropriate system components, including inverters, and how overall system costs are estimated and finalised.

The course introduces how solar energy is generated, stored and used within domestic settings, and how EV charging and battery storage integrate with existing electrical systems. Practical and professional skills are embedded throughout the course, including presenting system designs and technical recommendations clearly to clients. You will also explore health and safety requirements and basic fault‑finding considerations linked to electrical energy systems.

By the end of the course, you will have developed a clear understanding of domestic energy system design and the skills needed to support progression into further training or roles within renewable and sustainable energy technologies.

To study this course, you must be a qualified electrician or electrical engineer. You must also complete an English and Maths initial assessment.
