Course Overview

The Motor Vehicle Services and Maintenance Technician (Light Vehicle) Level 3 Apprenticeship supports you to develop the skills, knowledge and professional behaviours needed to work as an automotive technician on light vehicles. It is suitable if you are employed within the motor industry and want to build technical competence through a structured apprenticeship. 

The apprenticeship is delivered as a day‑release programme, with attendance at college one day per week for both theoretical and practical training alongside workplace learning. You will develop a strong understanding of vehicle systems and workshop practices, helping you work safely, efficiently and to industry standards. 

During the programme, you can learn about the basics of vehicle and emerging technologies, the types and characteristics of light vehicles, and the principles of diagnostics. Learning focuses on understanding how faults are identified and rectified, how specialist equipment is used correctly, and how vehicles are serviced and maintained in line with manufacturer requirements. You will also develop practical skills in maintaining a safe and efficient workshop, carrying out tasks independently, and removing, repairing and replacing components to professional standards. 

The apprenticeship places emphasis on problem solving, accuracy and responsibility, helping you build confidence and technical capability within a working garage environment. By the end of the apprenticeship, you will have developed the skills and experience needed to work competently as a light vehicle service and maintenance technician. 

This qualification supports progression within the automotive industry and continued professional development as vehicle technologies continue to evolve. This course is delivered at our Stephenson Road campus.

To study this course, you will need two GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above, which must include Maths and English, or a Level 2 qualification. You will need to be employed in a trade/industry related to the apprenticeship and you will need to find employment in a related trade/industry before applying for the apprenticeship programme you wish to complete.
This course is assessed through an Apprenticeship Standard programme which is occupation focused and concentrates on the relevant knowledge skills and behaviours required to complete the programme successfully.
This course is free to apprentices, as the cost is paid by your employer Large companies can fund the course using their apprenticeship levy. SMEs can access government funding to subsidise the cost by 95%
