Course Overview
This dynamic and intensive course prepares you for progression to degree level study in an art and design subject. The qualification encourages experimentation, creative risk taking, and independent working practices, while supporting you to develop a strong, high quality portfolio suitable for higher education applications.
You will explore a wide range of specialist subject areas, including graphic design and illustration, fashion and textiles, fine art and sculpture, printmaking and visual communication, multimedia, and photography. Alongside practical studio work, you will build essential creative and professional skills such as idea development, problem solving, contextual awareness, and critical analysis.
Throughout the course you will develop drawing, painting, and illustration skills, photography and digital design techniques, textile processes including garment construction and fashion communication, and 3D applications such as sculpture and installation. Maths and English are included as part of the programme of study where required. This course is designed to support progression to Foundation Diploma or degree level study, including pathways into University of the Arts London.
To study this course, you will need one A level or a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design, plus three GCSEs at grade 4 or C, including Maths and English, and an art related subject or equivalent qualification.
You will be asked to provide evidence of your ability in the subject, which is normally presented in the form of a portfolio. You will also be required to attend and successfully complete an interview event as part of the application process.
Your work will be assessed through a mixture of practical tasks and supporting written material.
Your progress will be supported by regular ongoing feedback throughout the course.
For school leavers, the course is free for UK learners who are under 19 and not in employment
For adult learners studying full time, the course fee is £3000. An Advanced Learner Loan may be available, subject to eligibility.
You can progress on to Higher Education at university or college, including on to our degrees in Costume Construction, Fashion Design, Fine Art, Graphic Design, Interior Design or Photography at the University Centre South Essex.
