Course Overview

Design engaging experiences, immersive worlds and innovative gameplay with this BSc (Hons) Games Design.
You will develop a blend of creative and technical skills across the full game development process, from concept and design through to development and publishing, while building a professional portfolio using industry-standard tools and technologies.

You will need a minimum of 64 UCAS points from one or more of the following:
- A Levels
- T Levels
- BTEC/UAL Extended Diploma
- Foundation Diploma in Art and Design (Level 3 or 4)
- Or equivalent EU/International qualifications, such as International Baccalaureate Diploma
- Maths And English GCSE passes at grade 4 or above (grade A*-C)
This list is not exhaustive, other qualifications may be considered. Entry to this course will also be determined by the quality of your application, looking primarily at your portfolio/showreel of work, personal statement and reference.
Contact hours: Typically 13 hours per week plus independent study, including:
- Four hours of lectures/seminars
- Six hours of workshops (including dedicated one-to-one tutorials when necessary)
- Two hours of Contextual Studies (either lecture or one-to-one tutorial)
- One hour group tutorials
Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. You will also be expected to undertake independent study, including research, project development and portfolio work.
You will learn in a dedicated games development environment with access to industry-standard software, high-spec computers, games consoles, VR equipment, motion capture technology, 3D printers and graphics tablets.
Industry engagement is embedded throughout the course, with guest speakers from leading organisations, opportunities to visit games studios and industry events across the UK, France, and Germany, and participation in live briefs, game jams and creative challenges.
Assessment is primarily coursework based and may include portfolios, practical projects, presentations, written assignments and research work. You will receive regular feedback through tutorials, project reviews and formal assessments to support your development throughout the course.
The cost of this course is £9,790 for 2027 study.
The course is eligible for funding through Student Loans England, subject to status.
Fees are per academic year for home/UK students.
The following course-related costs are included in the fees:
- Guest speakers, visiting lecturers and industry focussed workshops will be included in your course over the three years
- Third Year students will have the opportunity to showcase their final year work at the end of their studies. This may be a local, national or online platform. Event/exhibition costs will be covered by the Faculty of HE. In the past this has included Vertex. Students will be responsible for any additional costs associated with the production of their personal project (ie: printing, materials)
- Annual £20 of printing credit per year
Graduates progress into careers across the games, animation, visual effects and creative technology industries, in roles such as:
- Independent Game Developer
- Game Designer
- Technical Artist
- Software Engineer / Programmer
- 3D Artist
Some choose to continue their studies at master's level, while others benefit from our postgraduate support programme, which provides continued access to facilities and tutor guidance as they prepare for employment.
