Prepare for a career in healthcare as a trainee assistant practitioner, developing the knowledge, practical skills and professional experience needed to support high-quality patient care.
Through a combination of academic study and hands-on learning in healthcare settings, you will develop an understanding of person-centred care, healthcare practice and leadership across a range of care environments.

The curriculum reflects current healthcare practice and has been aligned to the Allied Health Professions Support Worker Competency, Education and Career Development Framework, helping you prepare for employment and career progression within the healthcare sector.
Course Structure
- Innovation and improvement through participatory action research
- Reflective approaches in implementing person-centred practice
- Care Planning processes in healthcare practice
- Recognising and meeting the needs of individuals with long-term health conditions
- Team and individual leadership: mentoring and coaching others
- End of life care planning and support
- A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care (or related subject)
- A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades A* to C and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) in subjects such as math’s and English.
- Other related Level 3 qualifications
- An Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further education institution
- Related work experience
- An international equivalent of the above
The qualification uses a unit based, coursework only assessment approach, combining academic work with practice based evidence.
There are no end of year tests or exams.
Instead learners demonstrate their competence through assignments and practical evidence.
The cost of this course is £6,520 for 2027 entry.
Fees are per academic year for Home/UK students.
- 13 hours delivery each week across 3 days for two years
- You will also be required to participate in independent learning of at least 1,440 hours including the mandatory 450 work placement hours
It is recommended that you budget for your own laptop. If this is not possible the College has IT resources that you can use.
Also, an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Enhanced Check (DBS) will be required for this course.
The Level 5 Higher National Diploma is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements to many relevant health and social care-related
courses, for example:
- BA/BSc (Hons) in Health and Social Care
- BA/BSc (Hons) in Health Studies
- BSc (Hons) in Adult Nursing
