Course Overview
The Entry to the Uniformed Services BTEC Level 1 Diploma is designed for learners who are considering a future career in the public services and want an introductory course to explore the sector. It is suitable for those who want to develop confidence, discipline and key skills while gaining a better understanding of what is required to progress into uniformed services roles.
Throughout the course, learners combine public service knowledge with employability skills that support both career development and everyday life. Learning focuses on becoming organised, working effectively with others, planning for progression and developing communication skills.
Learners also gain an introduction to the uniformed services, exploring values and standards, crime, security procedures and emergency planning. Practical learning is an important part of the course. Learners take part in fitness activities, adventurous and land‑based tasks, map navigation and responding to incidents, helping them develop teamwork, resilience and problem‑solving skills. These activities support both physical and mental wellbeing and reflect the expectations of public service environments.
We expect all public services students to wear a uniform when they attend college, reflecting the standards and professionalism of the sector. Learners will also need suitable clothing for fitness and sports activities. English and maths support is provided through Functional Skills or GCSE lessons for learners who have not yet achieved a grade 4.
By the end of the course, learners will have developed transferable skills and a strong foundation for progression to further public services study or other Level 2 pathways.
