Course Overview
The Health and Care Level 3 Extended Diploma is a two‑year, full‑time course designed for learners who want an in‑depth understanding of the health and social care sector. It is particularly suitable for those interested in progressing into careers or higher education pathways such as nursing, midwifery, community care, occupational therapy, social work or public health.
Throughout the course, learners study a balance of theory and applied learning that reflects real practice within health and care settings. In the first year, learners develop core knowledge around human lifespan development, working practices in health and social care, meeting individual care and support needs, and principles of safe practice. Learners also explore sociological and psychological perspectives and take part in work experience to gain insight into the sector.
In the second year, learners build on this foundation by studying anatomy and physiology for health and social care, current research within the sector and approaches to promoting public health. Learners also complete optional units that allow them to explore specific interests within health and care, further developing their knowledge and skills.
A work placement forms an important part of the programme, allowing learners to apply learning in real care environments and understand professional expectations. By the end of the course, learners will have developed strong academic knowledge, practical understanding and employability skills, supporting progression to higher education or careers across a wide range of health and social care professions.
